Zero Energy Design

Our clients choose exactly how they want their building to perform:

  • net-positive energy production (the building produces more energy than it consumes annually),
  • net-zero energy consumption (the building produces, on average, as much energy as it consumes annually), or
  • low energy consumption (the building consumes an extremely low amount of energy—about 80% less than the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code, and more than 90% less than the average existing building)

Renovations can also reach zero energy consumption, although working with existing structures does increase the complexity and difficulty of reaching extremely low levels of energy use. Our strategy is to work with clients to establish energy targets that make sense for each individual situation.

We believe that we have a responsibility to provide our clients with the very highest level of aesthetic and technical design. This is why we don't design a building and then see how much it costs to heat and cool; we ask the client how much energy they want to consume and then develop designs that meet their goal.
